"Though not as widely known as other basketball legends, hall-of-famer Elgin Baylor was one of the game's all-time greatest players-an innovative athlete, team player, and quiet force for change. A member of the early, scrappy NBA and one of the first professional African American players, Elgin (b. 1934) played in the late 1950s and early 1960s for the Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers, taking risks on and off the court. Known for his acrobatic style of moving and shooting, he inspired others to get creative with their game. But when traveling for away games, hotels and restaurants weren't as welcoming of Elgin as they were of his white teammates. Together, Elgin and his teammates boycotted places practicing segregation until the entire NBA followed suit. From picture book powerhouses Jen Bryant and Frank Morrison, Above the Rim is a peek into the early days of the NBA, a poetic telling of the life of an under-known athlete, and a celebration of standing up for what is right"--… (más)

I really enjoyed this book. I think the author does a good job of describing and showing just how inspirational this story is to others and shows that you should always follow your dreams. ( )

I was not familiar with NBA player, Elgin Baylor but now I'm grateful to know his story. As an African American basketball player, Elgin was discriminated by restaurants and hotels while traveling with his team. Inspired by Rosa Parks and the "sit ins" happening around the country, Elgin decided to remain seated at the basketball game. The NBA noticed his actions and made a new rule "No NBA teams would stay in a hotel or eat in a restaurant that practiced discrimination." Elgin Baylor changed basketball just as the title states.

This book tells the inspiring story of an African American man who had a big impact on the NBA. The author tells the story in a way that is easy for the reader to understand and follow. The illustrations are also very engaging, and they help to tell the story as well. It is great that this book highlights a person of color in this sport. ( )

Lyrical language and an inspiring story; this is a picture book for the more serious and thoughtful picture-book consumer. Elgin Baylor was not a figure I was very familiar with, never having really followed the NBA, but he appears worthy of the attention. ( )
