Forts of Canada introduces kids to the different types of forts built across the country. Meet a fort ghost, find out how Aboriginal people built Canada's first forts and how a 14-year-old girl saved a fort from attack. Kids will learn about fort life by creating models of forts, making fort foods and playing games from the past. From Fort Rodd Hill in British Columbia to Signal Hill in Newfoundland, a chart and a map describing and locating all of Canada's forts make this book a valuable reference for school projects.… (más)

Forts of Canada is a non fiction book for children ages 8-12 which includes facts, stories and activities to educate kids in various forts across Canada. This book is laid out like an Eye-Witness or text book for elementary with lots of pictures and a large, easy-to-read font. In the back is a glossary of terms, an index, a list of forts describing their location and what kind of fort it was as well as a map showing the location of each of the forts across our country.

I found Forts of Canada to be an interesting read with lots of fun activities inside. The hand drawings are well done and the way the book is written and laid out is very appropriate for the age level. There are little second person stories that explain a scenario and invites the reader to learn more about the topic, described on the next page. I liked that there were some legends included and one of the crafts instructed on how to make the "original fruit roll-up". This book is great for kids who are curious about the forts and is a good starting place for young readers. ( )

[Forts of Canada] is a children's history book containing stories and activities pertaining to Canada's pioneers. Stories include histories of some of Canada's more famous forts and general pioneer family & military life. Activities include 5 construction paper forts, 2 pioneer recipes and a scattering of pioneer children's toys & games.

As a quick & dirty history of Canada's pioneers, this book is top notch but the book is too short and the activities too sparse to warrant a full 5 stars. ( )
