The first parts of the book when he's a baby are terrifically funny. I felt the ending was a letdown, both too neatly wrapping things up and yet all over the place in its implications. And yes, it leaves room for a sequel. Still a good read, and enough to make me buy another of his apocalypse books, The Last Dog on Earth. I can also recommend The End of the World Running Club, ( ) The first thing I realised after reading this book is that speculative fiction is not a genre for me, though, I can definitely see & appreciate the appeal of it. The story was a mishmash of emotions, heart, & loads of scientific words that sounded intelligent & mysterious. The best & enduring part of this novel was the relationship between Ima & the human son. It was amazing. It was the one thing that kept me hooked to the story. The science jargon would be of interest to some but I couldn't help but skim through it. Though the side characters including Benedikt, Jore, pahya had excellent potential, they were severely underused & their characterization was ultimately a disappointment. The ending though predictable was fairly satisfying. Overall an ok read, speculative fiction fans will truly enjoy this. They decide to raise one child: a sole human to decide if we should again inherit the Earth. But the quiet and clinical Ima finds that there is more to raising a human than she had expected; and there is more to humanity's history than she has been told.
