"From Catriona McPherson, Agatha Award-winning author of Quiet Neighbors, comes Strangers at the Gate: a twisty, fascinating mystery that asks the question: who do you turn to when everyone's a stranger and you've stopped believing your own eyes? Finnie Doyle and Paddy Lamb are leaving city life in Edinburgh behind them and moving to the little town of Simmerton. Paddy's been made partner at the law firm in town, and Finnie has snagged a job as a church deacon. Their rented cottage is quaint; their new colleagues are charming, and they can't believe their luck. But only days after moving into the gate house, Finnie begins to have doubts. She keeps hearing strange sounds, and the thicket of trees make her feel claustrophobic rather than safe. When they witness the bloody aftermath of a brutal murder, it changes everything. They've each been keeping secrets about their pasts. And they both know their precious new start won't survive a scandal. Together, for the best of reasons, they make the worst decision of their lives. And that's only the beginning. The deep, deep valley where Simmerton sits is unlike anywhere Finnie and Paddy have been before. They are not the only ones hiding in its shadow and very soon they've lost control of the game they decided to play.."--… (más)

Funny city people afraid of nature. What's-her-name freaks out at an owl screaming. Silly git.

Entertaining - just when I thought I knew where it would go, it took a hard turn. Finnie (oh what a name!) began as a twit and ended like one, too. Only in fiction do people never charge their phones, drop them when startled and then step on them. And only in fiction would anyone raiser their cheating and murderous spouse's offspring as their own. I say let the MIL have it and run far away! ( )

I read this after hearing the first chapter read aloud on Facebook live by Hannah Mary McKimmon. The book is an odd mixture of disturbing and humorous. A young couple, Paddy and Finn, an attorney and a deacon, are offered jobs out of the blue in a small town in Scotland. They have dinner with an older couple, the senior law partner and a member of the church's board. The plot concerns murder, adoption (Paddy and another character were adopted as children) and a complex plan. Finn's confused narration is well written, and interactions with the young couple's parents are realistic and sometimes hilarious. ( )

Murder Mystery. Takes place in Scotland, Paddy & Finnie both get offers to relocate to Simmerton. Paddy is offered a partnership with a law firm and Finnie is offered a position as a Deacon at the local church. All of this comes with a Cottage on the grounds of the Firm's Owner. Something is off and Finnie feels it. When they find the dead bodies of their dinner hosts just minutes after they left. They don't call the police. They don't want to be investigated due to things in their past that would point to them as suspects. There are interesting characters that make this book an interesting read - Shannon the Albino, who was separated by her twin thru adoption; Mr Sloan who lives in the cottage near by - Hiding Mrs Sloan; Paddy's Parents & Finnies's Parents who show up for Finnies fisrt sermon. The ending wasn't as anticipated, and somewhat confusing to switch mental gears to get it. I can say it was somewhat of a disappointment, because I wasn't prepared for the betrayal. ( )

Two days. That's how long it took me to inhale this book. It has been quite a while since I had a book I didn't want to put down. At the beginning of this year I made the decision to stop reading psychological thrillers. There are only so many plots that can be duplicated in a different manner and they all began to blend together. I did keep a few notable authors on my list, those for whom I would make an exception. McPherson, is one such other and again she did not disappoint. Her books are original, her plots interesting as are her characters.

With gothic undertones, this story has more red herrings in it than one can fathom. It is like a maze, where one keeps making wrong turns and things never quite make sense. There is a burnt house, a couple who now live in the manner house, dead bodies that disappear, an albino young woman searching for her brother, a strange elderly man whose wife always seems to be ill, and a married couple who hope for a brighter future. I couldn't resist, had to find how this played out and though I had an inkling, it was just that, an inkling. The denouement was stranger than I thought. Some characters are just good actors, I guess.

Anyway, you may not feel the same way, but I found this book made for an enjoyable two days of reading. ( )
