Warren is a birdwatcher. One day he found something in the bushes. It was a bird! Sort of... it had wings like a bird. But had feet like a person. It didn't look like an angel because it didn't have arms like an angel was supposed to have. He looked around, yelled if it was anyone's, yelled that he was taking it, and the proceeded to do just that. And left. He's wife Tina and him took to their "Beedy" who could actually talk. But what Beedy really wanted to do was be free. So goes the tale of Warren, Tina, a girl named Lottie, and a rescuer trying to see Beady again to say goodbye.

This was such a crazy good book. Just pure fun. I have no idea why but it reminded me of a book Roald Dahl would write. It was that good. Beedy was able to change every life she encountered without knowing it. She was just a bird/girl who wanted peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and to fly. What more could you want in life? Warren and Tina became her parents and they loved her so much and wanted to protect her. I had mixed feelings with Lottie on account of she kind of forcibly made her into her friend. Well her and Warren and Tina kind of also did but not as much as Lottie. They did it without knowing really what they were getting themselves into. I mean who would have thought they would be meeting someone like Beedy? Poor rescuer. The whole thing kind of ruined his life and he needed closure.

This book was just silly and sweet and wonderful. It was cute and funny and just fantastic. I loved every minute of it. I loved the illustrations as well. They were a perfect mix to the story. Very entertaining seeing them with how the story was playing out. I'm so happy I was able to read this lovely little adventure book.

“You can do a lot with wings,” said Warren soothingly. “There are always things to be done up high. Delivering airmail letters, for instance. Keeping an eye on things.”

Eep is the sound a bird-girl makes. Specifically, a girl named Beedy, a girl with wings instead of arms that Warren, a bird watcher, finds under a bush one day.

“This was a bird in the shape of a little girl. Or a little girl in the shape of a bird. Or something in between.”

He takes her home, and with his wife Tina feeds her, clothes her, teaches her how to drink soup using a spoon (between her toes, not quite suitable for dining out). Beedy loves peanut butter. Or as she calls it, “peeneet beettee” (she can’t quite pronounce ‘u’).

While Beedy may look like a girl (if you hide her arms in a cape like they do) her true nature is to fly, to be outdoors and in the sky, and to feed on insects (and the occasional peanut butter sandwich) and so she takes off, and Tina and Warren go off in search of her, meeting new and interesting people along the way.

A fun quirky little book with quite darling illustrations. Writer and illustrator Joke van Leeuwen has also written other interesting-sounding children’s books. ( )

Bestaat toeval? Mijn bedoeling was een post te schrijven over een boek van Joke van Leeuwen, één van mijn favoriete auteurs. Ik had al een boek in gedachten.
Als ik zaterdag de Volkskrant inkijk, zie ik een interview met Joke van Leeuwen in het magazine. Da’s leuk, maar vooral toevallig!

Dan krijg ik bericht: een klein meisje in mijn vriendenkring is een engeltje geworden. Een echt engeltje in de hemel. De papa, mama en zusjes van het meisje houden erg veel van haar. Ze willen haar nog lang bij hen houden. Maar ze moeten haar laten gaan.
Steeds als ik aan dat kleine meisje denk, verschijnt Viegeltje op mijn netvlies. Viegeltje is de hoofdpersoon uit het boek Iep! van Joke van Leeuwen. Opeens begrijp ik: de titel die ik in mijn gedachten had, moet ik even laten rusten. Het verhaal Iep! wil verteld worden!

Ik noem Viegeltje de hoofdpersoon. Maar is ze wel een persoon? Ze is een vogeltje en een meisje tegelijk.
Vogelliefhebber Warre vindt haar onder een struik:
“ …. Dit was een vogel in de vorm van een meisje. Of een meisje in de vorm van een vogel. Of iets daartussenin.”..

Warre en zijn vrouw Tine verzorgen het vogelmeisje en geven haar de naam Viegeltje. Ze willen haar houden als hun eigen kindje. Maar Viegeltje vliegt weg. Dit bezorgt Warre en Tine een ware zoektocht…

Viegeltje is eigenlijk ook een soort engeltje. Het boek Iep! ontroert. Het leert mij afscheid nemen, loslaten en er vrede mee hebben.

Ik doe het boek te kort als ik je de indruk geef dat het droevig is. Dat is het echt niet. Het is juist een boek vol humor. Het is een boek om van te houden. De titel Iep! slaat op een geluidje dat Viegeltje maakt. Je vindt het boek op de jeugdafdeling, maar ik vind het een boek voor jong en oud. De taal van Joke van Leeuwen is zo bijzonder. Zo eenvoudig, zo droog, zo vol humor, zo waar. En dan haar geweldige illustraties die het verhaal versterken en je doen grinniken.
Onlangs werd dit veelvuldig bekroonde boek Iep! verfilmd. Ik heb de film nog niet gezien. Hij is vast mooi, maar het spelen met taal en de illustraties zal ik er niet in vinden.
