"After a disastrous summer spent at her family summer home on Cape Cod, seventeen-year-old Ann Gordon was left with a secret that changed her life forever, and created a rift between her sister, Poppy, and their adopted brother, Michael. Now, fifteen years later, her parents have died, leaving Ann and Poppy to decide the fate of the Wellfleet home that's been in the Gordon family for generations. For Ann, the once-beloved house is tainted with bad memories. Poppy loves the old saltbox, but after years spent chasing waves around the world, she isn't sure she knows how to stay in one place. Just when the sisters decide to sell, Michael re-enters their lives with a legitimate claim to the house. But more than that, he wants to set the record straight about that long ago summer. Reunited after years apart, these very different siblings must decide if they can continue to be a family-and the house just might be the glue that holds them together. Told through the shifting perspectives of Ann, Poppy, and Michael, this assured and affecting debut captures the ache of nostalgia for summers past and the powerful draw of the places we return to again and again. It is about second homes, second families, and second chances. Tender and compassionate, incisive and heartbreaking, The Second Home is the story of a family you'll quickly fall in love with, and won't soon forget"--… (más)

This book was hard to put down. I've been to Cape Cod a few times and it was a wonderful experience *revisiting* it through this book.
A Wisconsin family has a summer home in Wellfleet on Cape Cod. An event that happened one summer tears the family apart. Now it is 15 years later. Can the house bring them all together again?
Terrific read. ( )

Wow an amazingly well written book, and interesting story on top of it.
Ann and Poppy are sisters who live with their teacher parents in Milwaukee and spend every summer in Cape Cod at a home past down to them from their great great grandparents. Ann befriends Michael, a kid at school and her parents eventually adopt him.
During his second summer at the Cape is a catastrophe for the 3 teenagers.
Jump ahead 15 years and those disasters are the basis for the rest of the book.
I really liked this story, and can’t wait to read more from this (hard to believe) first time author! ( )

The story begins in the past, when Ann, Michael, and Poppy are in high school. Michael's mother passed away and instead of being tossed around, the Gordon's take him in. His second summer with them, he learns that they aren't as "perfect" as everyone thinks. Everyone has their secrets, everyone. When Connie and Ed pass away, the kids reunite after fifteen years. These kids, once best of friends, are now like oil and water. So many secrets has kept them apart, can they finally clear the air?

I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It was riveting, emotional, and thought provoking. I liked the toggle from past to present as each character reflected on their past. This book had me tearing up as the things they had been through were brought to light. This is a fantastic beach or rainy day read, just be sure to kleenex nearby. ( )

This was a wonderful novel. It wound up being not at all what I expected—from the cover and blurb, I was somehow thinking it was going to be a beach read of sorts… long lost family reuniting at their beach home in Cape Cod. The tone feels like more of a literary character-driven sort of novel, with quite a few dark spots. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s way with words and found myself drawn into the setting and the characters.

Ann and Poppy are in high school when they meet Michael, a fellow classmate whose mother has just died, leaving him homeless. Michael comes to live with the Gordon family over the next few years, bonding with all of them and eventually getting adopted. I won’t spoil what happens next, but it definitely kept me turning pages. Author Christina Clancy can craft a twisted tale, for sure! Told in split timelines with the events of fifteen years ago, and the present, we see how Ann, Poppy and Michael have come to be where they are today and whether it’s possible to find your way back to family after terrible tragedy and decades of estrangement.

Please excuse typos/name misspellings. Entered on screen reader. ( )

I normally try and wait to review books that have publishing dates that are 6 months away but after I read the book summary of Christina Clancy's debut novel I knew I had to read it right away. I am a big family of sagas that follow a family over time and The Second Home centers around the Gordon family and spans multiple decades.

Clancy's writing style is incredibly detailed and engrossing and I felt like I could picture each of her main characters so well. They were layered and raw and while I couldn't always relate to them (Poppy) I felt like I could understand them because of Clancy's gifted character development.

The Cape Cod setting was perfect for this family drama that reads like a beach read but has a depth that made it so much more than that. Through the shifting perspectives of Ann, Poppy, and Michael, secrets are revealed and family bonds are tested.

The ending was particularly satisfying and I loved how the charactered connected and reconnected throughout time and the idea that family can sometimes be something you create on your own.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press for an advanced copy. ( )
