"When their foster-turned-adoptive mother suddenly dies, four brothers struggle to keep open the doors of her beloved Harlem knitting shop. Jesse Strong is known for two things: his devotion to his adoptive mom, Mama Joy, and his reputation for breaking hearts. When Mama Joy unexpectedly passes away, he and his brothers have different plans on what to do with Strong Knits, their neighborhood knitting store. Jesse wants to keep the store open. His brothers want to tie off loose ends and close shop... Part-time shop employee, Kerry Fuller has kept her crush on Jesse a secret. When she overhears his impassioned plea to his brothers to keep the knitting shop open, she volunteers to help. Unlike Jesse, Kerry knows the knitty-gritty of the business and together they make plans to reinvent Strong Knits for a new generation. But the more time they spend together, the stronger the chemistry builds between them. I was quickly wrapped up in caring about Strong Knits and the characters the shop is so important to, and the tension of hoping the shop would make it was definitely well-woven - unfortunately the romance plotline seemed to falter and be brought in a bit messily in places. Sometimes it worked neatly, sometimes it felt like a jarring switch of gears. The pacing was a little stop and go in general as well, with information coming at odd spots.

The end left me happy but it was still slightly abrupt, and also left me wondering on a few details that were left unclear.

I will be curious to see if the other Strong brothers get their own books. ( )

Recommended: yup
For healthy attitudes towards sex, for endless tension, for investigations into family dynamics and systemic societal racial prejudices. And the occasional mention of knitting

Thoughts:
While this was quite different from what I expected, I still really liked it! There was a much stronger focus on how Jesse and Kerry felt about each other than I expected. That was the majority of the story, it seemed: alternating between then thinking about the other. The aspect of the business having to be saved and working to restart it seemed almost like a subplot at most, and not much happened with it until about 70% into the book.

The romance was eh, though the descriptions of their sexual thoughts and actions was excellent. They're were no descriptions of actual sex, but be aware this is more graphic than *I* expected for a story apparently focused on knitting. ( )

How awesome love ins yarn shop. Men confidently identifying as knitters. Also a wonderful story about fining into/ resisting love. The community setting is really wonderful. ( )

Loved this! When Kerry, the heroine, says:
I'm so fucking tired of this. I'm sick of everyone thinking they know what's good for me. Of thinking they even know me, for that matter.

I felt that so hard. That was my life in my 20s, and I'm sure any other woman who got tagged as being a "good girl". Props for illustrating that so well in this story.
I also love how the brothers and their relationship with each other are drawn. I'm guessing the others will also get their own books and I'm so here for it.

Just a great book all around. I'm very stingy with 5 stars but this one earned it. ( )
