Da Vinci Code meets Tomb Raider in this award-winning thriller that #1 NYT's author James Rollins called, "Full of action and suspense."

Spain 1057: During a thunderous battle, the first King of Aragon wrestles Alexander the Great's priceless Egyptian weapon from the Moors, but finds it holds a terrifying and mysterious power.

A thousand years later, on a hushed, fog-shrouded, Napa morning, gunshots and the sound of breaking glass shatter the silence. Maddy Marshall, an app designer and aikido instructor, and her twin brother Will Argones, an engineer, quickly run toward the sound. Horrified, they discover a sniper's bullet has found its human target.

Before the pool of blood on the living room floor is dry, the twins are sent on an arcane quest to recover Alexander's ancient weapon. Joined by a VanOps covert agent, they soon discover the rifle's sights are now set on them. No place is safe, a wrong move means death, and even a simple phone call is off limits if they are to survive.

From a medieval Spanish castle, they follow a time-worn trail, starting at a secret warren under the streets of Jerusalem. But if the killer finds the weapon first, it will be used to cripple the United States' eye-in-the-sky early warning systems, allowing the Russians to swoop in and prey on the vulnerable nation.

Can Maddy learn to wield the power of the dangerous weapon in time to stop the Russian scheme? Failure means the fragile world peace will be forever shattered...

This was an action packed thriller that should be the top of your TBR if you're looking for a heart-racing read that will have you on the edge of your seat. Centrae does an excellent job of describing everything, bringing it to life before your eyes. The MCs are great, with plenty of depth, and it's easy to see them as real. There's a lot of action and plenty of twists that will make it hard to put down once you start reading. Perfect for all thriller lovers! ( )

VanOps: The Lost Power really hit the spot for me. I’ve not really had a proper, exciting adventure novel with guns, spies, assassins, and mystery in a good, long while.

The first word that came to mind was exciting. It really doesn’t let up often. There’s always something exciting going on to keep the reader and characters interested, invested, and motivated. It reminded me a lot of the movie National Treasure and the novel Blue Madagascar.

I listened to the audiobook of this story and I noticed the chapters starting off with a time of day notifications blew right past me before I had time to process them. I was listening to an audiobooks.com version, so I didn’t have the benefit of being able to look at the chapter listing on audible. That’s one way the physical and possibly the ebook version might be easier to follow.

As far as criticisms of the story or characters go, I really can’t think of anything. It was exactly what I want out of an international espionage novel. There were twists, turns, reveals, danger, excitement, and more. It’s a really solid, well-written novel that kept me on the edge of my seat.

The narrator of the audiobook version did an incredible job.

NOTE: This copy was provided to me free of charge as a physical review copy. The opinions stated in this review are mine and mine alone, I was not paid or requested to give this book a certain rating, suggestion, or approval. ( )

action-adventure, thriller, historical-research, murder, supernatural, suspense, family-dynamics, international-crime-and-mystery, conspiracy *****

Can't possibly go wrong with this one: murder, conspiracy, international pursuit, and all interspersed with historical data! It's a real thrill ride complete with martial arts, medieval weaponry, car chases, and even helicopter pursuit! The publisher's blurb is pretty good for an intro, and no spoilers here. Kept me reading straight through to the end and waiting for the next one!
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Books Go Social via NetGalley. Thank you! ( )
