An Audible Original from Audible Theater, Evil Eye is an Emerging Playwrights Commission, written for and available exclusively on Audible.Usha is convinced that the Evil Eye, a curse that brings continuous misfortune, was cast upon her daughter, Pallavi, in the womb. What else could have possibly left her driven, career-oriented daughter edging closer and closer to 30 without a prospective husband? Determined to set Pallavi on the right path, Usha arranges date after date with potential suitors--but after yet another setup fails, it seems her efforts are proving fruitless. But in an unexpected turn of events, Pallavi becomes her own matchmaker when she meets--and quickly falls for--Sandeep, a young Indian-American entrepreneur. And though she expects her mother will be elated with her finally finding a man, Pallavi is distraught and confused to find her mother growing increasingly suspicious of Sandeep's motives...and his true identity.Told through a series of phone calls and voicemails, this Audible Original penned by award-winning rising star playwright Madhuri Shekar transitions seamlessly from a light-hearted family dramedy to an unexpectedly supernatural thriller. With an endearing cast of well-rounded characters, sharp, natural dialogue, and a shocking edge-of-your-seat climax, Evil Eye is a can't-miss tale about cultural miscommunications, family secrets, and the lingering echoes of trauma. Please note: This audio contains strong language, distressing situations, and descriptions of abuse and violence that some listeners may find upsetting. 'Evil Eye' is told entirely through phone calls and voicemail messages. Even though using this technique to capture all the action required a little ingenuity at one point, I found style immersive and engaging.

I loved the progression in the story. At the start, in the conversations between the living and working in America daughter and her returned home to New Delhi mother, it seems as if the story is about a mother anxious to get her now almost twenty-nine-years old daughter married. Of the two, the daughter is the one easiest to relate to. I smiled as I watched her appease her anxious and seeemingly out of touch mother.

Then the story took a darker turn and my perceptions began to shift. As the tension rose, it increasingly seemed as if it was the mother who really understood what was going on. Except that what the mother thought was going on was impossible. Wasn't it?

This was a tense story that kept me guessing and which conveyed a real sense of threat. ( )

Wow. This is a fantastic audiobook and it is done so, so well. A short, thrilling but extremely captivating story of a Telugu family in the US (worry not, the book is in English). This book is a series of phone calls to tell a story with so many twist and turns. Highly recommend it.

(I am so thrilled at these audiobook and production quality. This gives a peek into the future of the audio content. We are not going to just get a person reassign a book or talking to an expert over the audio. It’s going to more vibrant and exciting.) ( )

Production and acting on this were great for a quick read/listen. ( )

I nearly quit after the first 15 minutes because I thought it was just going to be a mom pushing her daughter to find a husband. No, I didn't read the blurb...

Anyway, I ended up really enjoying the story. The delivery is different and it took me a bit to get into but glad I stuck it out.

Fun, quick listen. ( )

This Amazon-exclusive, audio-only horror tale is about a young Indian American woman named Pallavi. Independent-minded, she's been dodging her anxious, superstitious mom's attempts to arrange her marriage. On her own, she meets a Mr. Right that even mom should approve. But moms have secrets.

Unlike in most audiobooks, all the characters are voiced by different actors and there are sound effects and occasional background music. The narrative is epistolary, told through phone conversations and voicemails. A decent, attention-keeping listen for its 98-minute duration. ( )
