She's just finished potting the last of her herb starts when a tornado rips through her farm, destroying her crops, scattering her lifestock and tearing up the barn. As Lucy searches for two kids lost in the storm, she makes a grisly discovery: her neighbor's home health aide, Eva, strangled with a hand-knitted scarf. While investigating the young woman's death, Lucy discovers that blood isn't always thicker than water...and that somebody may be taking advantage of the town's more vulnerable citizens. Lucy Resnick just got a call from neighboring farmer Peter that it is going to hail. He suggests she ground cover her new plants and put her animals - cow, goats and kids, chickens into the barn. Her friend, Quinn comes to help her.

As the storm heads her way, now with a tornado warning Lucy and Quinn turn into it, heading to Lucy’s neighbor to make sure Dotty has heard and taken necessary preparations. When they arrive at Dotty’s, she is still in her bed, her caregiver Eva had gone out about an hour before and not yet returned. Lucy, Quinn and Dotty are forced ride out the storm in Dotty’s root cellar.

The tornado touched down right through Lucy’s farm. It left her plantings uprooted and her kid goats missing. While searching for the kids she finds a body … Eva Clarke … and it is only the first body she will find. Knowing that the Sheriff will take the path of least resistance and arrest the easiest suspect, generally one of her friends; Lucy prepares he own investigation of who wanted Eva Clarke dead and why.

Eva was a caring young woman who assists several seniors in town, has made “enemies” of a local assisted living facility. Jesse, Dotty’s son wants to put Dotty in that facility and he has argued with Eva.

Lucy runs into Dotty at the market and is shocked to hear she was removed from her farm; Dotty asks for her help to return home. The farm is put up for sale by a less than ethical realtor on contract to local judge. Days later Jesse is found dead, too.

Lucy knows something is off ..

A pleasant cozy mystery, it may seem an odd thing to say, but the story resonates with sunlight and friendship in a town where neighbors help neighbors. ( )
