It's a bitter winter in Minnesota--too cold to kill. There hasn't been a murder for a month, but the lull quickly comes to an end for Detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth, when they're called to the gruesome homicide of Kelly Ramage. Found in a friend's vacant house, this was no random attack, and clues reveal that she was living a very dangerous secret life. Magozzi and Gino trace her steps back to an art gallery where she was last seen alive. The gallery seems like a dead end, but the art is disturbing and exploitative. It may very well be inspiring a sadistic killer, because in this instance, art doesn't imitate life, it imitates death. Tipped off about a year-old murder that is a mirror-image of Kelly's crime scene, Gino and Magozzi enlist the aid of Grace MacBride and her eccentric, tech genius partners in Monkeewrench Software to help them decipher the digital trail that might connect the cases. As coincidences emerge, Magozzi, Gino, and the team have to work around the clock at breakneck pace to unravel a series of clues that form the framework of a larger, more sweeping, and insidious conspiracy than any of them could have imagined. Is Kelly the last person to die or just the most recent? And is there any way to stop it?… (más)

Ten books later and the cases are still thrilling and the characters engaging! Enough said. ( )

I liked this book, but not quite as much as the earlier ones for some reason. I think that I just had trouble following the plot lines - mostly keeping up with who's who. There were a lot of Eastern European names that I'm not familiar with was part of the problem, making it harder to keep up with the characters, but also the sheer number of characters and two loosely related plotlines. I have a feeling I might enjoy it more if I were to read it again.

Also, I thought that the author was trying too hard to push what appears to be an anti-crypto stand. Although I'm well aware of the dark side of crypto like bitcoin, I'm also well aware of the advantages. But in the story, they all seem to treat it like some sort of contraband, or as just plain stupid. To me, you could say the same things about fiat cash; criminals use it to avoid tracking and it can be unrecoverably stolen. It's just not convenient for the internet age.

But the best part of the series is the people and their interactions, and they were all present and accounted for. We even get a new love interest in the story, for Roadrunner of all people. ( )

It's winter in Minneapolis. It's been so cold that homicide detectives Magozzi and Rolseth haven't had a new case in a month. A psychic medium seeks help from the detectives for a woman who may soon be in harm's way. However, down at one of the premier art galleries, a group is protesting the sick and disturbing new artist that has an exhibit. A woman who was last seen at the art show is found dead. Meanwhile, the Monkeewrench Software group is hot on the trail of a bitcoin thief who stole millions. Roadrunner, one of the Monkeewrench geniuses, meets one of his neighbors walking down the frigid streets. Something wasn't right and he was worried about her.

If possible, this book's storyline was more convoluted than previous Monkeewrench volumes. It was a fast chaotic read, but came to a satisfying resolution. I hope there will be more in this series. ( )

Bondage murder case provoked by S&M art display, with a convoluted list of characters that you can't keep track of. I have too many other books to read by better authors. ( )
