This book talks about all the different types of desserts in the world, how to classify them, and shows a map where they are located. Identifies the different plant life found in desserts, formations formed there, and what type of animal/insects/reptiles you can find there. It briefly touches on the people who live in desserts and what type of resources can be found there as well...very briefly.

This book explores what the landscape of a desert is, giving descriptions of plants, and animals (Kangaroo rats, coyotes, roadrunner, hawks, owl), and people that live in the deserts (nomads). It's illustrated and contains a fair amount of text, so I would suggest this for a read aloud to older kids. This book would be great at comparing and contrasting different landscapes (children could compare their city environment to the deserts'). It does contain a graphic organizer at the end of the book which gives more detailed information about for example: the Atacama desert, the Sahara desert, etc. ( )

This is book read by my son in his school and I can say that he did learned a lot from it illustrating the nature flora and fauna. In the eyes of the children they do enjoy the pictures on it and at the same time the well written description of plants and animals that every children will be able to fathom at an early age. This has been a great guide to the kids a ease of help for mothers and teachers as well. ( )

This book was filled with a lot of very interesting facts, with great labeled drawings. It did not, however, have an obvious progression from page to page. The book unfortunately misuses the term "poisonous." A snake is venomous if its bite has toxic venom. A poisonous snake would be dangerous to eat. One can eat the meat of a venomous snake, amusing one does not eat the venom. Also, the juxtaposition of specific plant and animal information, while not geographically specified, and the overly broad generalization of nomadic people living in "tribes," was off putting and disappointing. The second to last page discuss mining and drilling as positive, while the opposite and last page summarize the beauty and vibrance of the life in the desert. There was no mention of the need for preservation, explicitly or implicitly. ( )
