"Paris, 1938. Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli ("Schiap") are fighting for recognition as the most successful and influential fashion designer in France, and their rivalry is already legendary. They oppose each other at every turn, in both their politics and their designs: Chanel's are classic, elegant, and practical; Schiaparelli's bold, experimental, and surreal. Lily Cooper, a recently widowed American teacher, travels to Paris to visit her brother, Charlie, and try to move on from the loss of her husband. On her first day there, Charlie insists on buying her a couture dress for her birthday--a Chanel. Lily reluctantly agrees but wants a Schiaparelli, not a Chanel. Charlie's Jewish girlfriend, Ania, one of the most beautiful and prominent women in Paris, begins wearing Schiap's designs as well, and soon much of Paris is following in her footsteps. Adding insult to injury, Chanel has her eye on Baron von Dincklage, the head of Nazi propaganda in Paris, with whom Ania is also involved. Schiap takes an interest in Lily and offers the budding artist a job at her shop. Suddenly, Lily finds herself wrapped up with Schiap and her personal war with Chanel. And as their fierce competition reaches new and dangerous heights, another war is looming on their doorstep and getting closer every day..."--… (más)

The Last Collection: a Novel of Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel. Jean Mackin. 2019. The subtitle pretty much says it all except that the novel takes place in Paris from pre WWII through the 1950s. The narrator is a young American widow who is also an artist, Lilly. She is called to Paris by her brother whose wealthy girl friend wear clothes designed by both women. Lilly gets a job with Schiaparelli and becomes friends with Chanel and discusses the differences in the styles of both designers with the eye of an artist. Based on fact, this is a part of history I’d never thought of and fans of WWII fiction will find this fascinating. ( )

3.5 stars from me.

Thank you to Goodreads and Amazon for this ebook. I forgot I won it and I didn't see it on my Kindle app on my Ipad until I was going through my ebooks for one to read. I won it in 2020!!

A wonderful book about fashion, Paris in 1938 before the war and the rivalry between Coco Chanel and Elsa "Schiap" Schiaparelli. Lily just happened to be visiting her brother Charlie in Paris and then became friends with both of them. What a wild ride both wanting her to wear their clothes. Other things were happening before the war and then she went back to New York. She was an artist in her own right.

I loved that the author had the chapter beginnings of certain colors. ( )

Lily Sutter had no idea that an invitation from her brother to come to Paris would introduce her both to Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel. The year is 1939, and the Nazi threat is growing stronger and stronger. However, in Paris is it already war - a fashion war between Chanel and Schiaparelli. For Lily, it all starts with her wanting a Schiaparelli dress instead of a Chanel. Suddenly, Lily a teacher, is offered a job at Schiaparelli store. But it's a time of unrest and being in Paris at the time could be dangerous...

I won this through the Goodreads Giveaways and I was so excited to read it. The book was well written and the story flowed well. It was an engaging story mixing fashion, war and love and loss. It also made me want more. ( )

One of my favorite books read this year, could not put this one down and shed a few tears.
Great characters and of course Paris is always a fabulous location. I learned a great deal from this book that I did not know about the Paris fashion industry at that time. ( )
