Early morning on Monday, October 9, 2017, wildfires burned through Northern California, resulting in 44 fatalities. In addition, 6,200 homes and 8,900 structures and were destroyed. Author Brian Fies's firsthand account of this tragic event is an honest, unflinching depiction of his personal experiences, including losing his house and every possession he and his wife had that didn't fit into the back of their car. In the days that followed, as the fires continued to burn through the area, Brian hastily pulled together A Fire Story and posted it online-it immediately went viral. He is now expanding his original webcomic to include environmental insight and the fire stories of his neighbors and others in his community. nonfiction graphic memoir detailing the author and his wife's experiences, among several other survivors' accounts, during and in the aftermath of the October 9, 2017 fire that devastated their neighborhood, city, and a not insignificant chunk of northern California. Escaping the fast-moving flames was just the beginning (44 people weren't lucky enough to make it), dealing with insurance and rebuilding was another completely unexpectedly difficult challenge.

Completely devastating stories. A must-read. ( )

Thousands of houses were destroyed in the Tubbs Fire in Santa Rosa and as many families were thrown into chaos. Brian Fies brings us into his story, but he's also a journalist, telling other people's stories.

The drawings and text are walking me through the story, then a page turn hits me, like 37 to 38, 67 to 68, or 126 to 127. I know those numbers mean nothing to you, so read the book. Find the page that hits you in the heart. ( )

Memoir
This one is brutal. It's beautifully illustrated and unfortunately still extremely relevant. The author wakes to find a fire is heading towards their house. After they evacuate, their house is completely destroyed. He catalogs the devastation caused by the fire, and how it impacted others at well.
It was very well done. ( )
