This is a powerful story about a boy narrator and his first year working in the ice harvest. He works under the guidance of his uncle and with a horse named Max. There is a disturbing climax to the story, when Max falls in and the narrator has to strangle him so that he can be lifted out.

A boy learns to help his family with the ice and is physically and mentally tested when his horse falls in the lake when no one else is around. A good book to teach about suspense and problem solving. ( )

This story about the ice horse tells about a young boy and his first summer harvesting ice in the winter with his uncle. The boy has to remember the words his uncle told him to save his horse who has fallen through the ice while they were working. This book is a great book to talk about how hard kids used to work in this country helping their families. ( )
