It has the potential to be comforting or helpful to a young reader who is, like the main character Willow, grieving and trying to bottle up their emotions. But in the end, the character growth did not feel earned. ( ) This graphic novel has elements of fantasy, but is firmly rooted in realistic problems for Willow. Willow has terrible fights with her big sister that leave her full of guilt, and she can't seem to control these negative feelings that build up until she explodes in anger again. When she flees to the woods she meets a stranger who helps her be kinder to herself. Featured in a blog post at https://booksbeyondbinaries.blog/2019/11/25/trans-affirming-picture-books-2019/ Mentioned in a blog post at https://booksbeyondbinaries.blog/2019/12/23/2019-in-review/ Very sweet illustrations, and a book that's all about feelings -- how they can be monsters than make you feel isolated and angry and hurtful to others, but they are also an important part of us. Two kids wandering in the woods -- 1 has lost her mother, 1 is a dryad from a large family who's run away. Lots of sweetness, good subject, but ultimately the message was kind of confusing, because they showed so much of the bad side of the monsters and hardly any of the good. Or maybe it was a simpler message -- if you bottle up your feelings they will get bigger and bigger and overwhelm you -- but I don't really feel like there was much of an effective mechanism for defusing them either. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

"Willow loves the woods near her house. They're calm and quiet, so different from her own turbulent emotions, which she keeps locked away. When her emotions get the better of her one day, she decides to run away into the woods. There, she meets Pilu, a lost tree spirit who can't find her way back home--which turns out to be the magnolia grove Willow's mom used to take her to. Willow offers to help Pilu, and the two quickly become friends. But the journey is long, and Pilu isn't sure she's ready to return home yet--which infuriates Willow, who's determined to make up for her own mistakes by getting Pilu back safely. As a storm rages and Willow's emotions bubble to the surface, they suddenly take on a physical form, putting both girls in danger ... and forcing Willow to confront her inner feelings once and for all."--Provided by publisher.
