Liza McCarthy has never known the love she so desperately craves. The illegitimate child of a broken marriage, the identity of her father and her heritage are a well-kept secret. Then one night she receives a call from a mysterious woman claiming to be the sister of a former boyfriend. The woman warns that Liza's life is in danger just before two men break into her Southern California home. Events spin out of control as Liza is forced to leave her quiet life and set out on a journey that leads her to the tiny, mid-western town of Halden's Mill. There she is taken in by the Finns, a mysterious family who claim to guard the entrance to the fabled land of the faerie. Stephen King meets the land of the Fae. This was a very heavy read. The style reminded me of the Talisman. I happen to be a huge King can so the writing style worked for me. The world building is cinematic. The story keeps you engaged and in a constant state of wonder. You have to pay close attention because it's 3rd person POV and follows quite a few characters jumping scenes often. I enjoyed the read but the ending could have used a little something to give it that wow factor. I will definitely try more from this author ( )

It took me a while to get into this book, because it was slow going in. I found myself putting it down a few times and having to dredge through it during the middle. The main character was hard at times to relate with, and other times she seemed unrealistic like with some of the more horrific scenes she was being put through. The ending was more confusing than actually answering questions. It felt rushed and a bit scattered. It was a good read overall but I feel it could have gone through another edit or two. ( )

A really good story with a great new look at the idea of alost child with fae blood, maybe. But, the author seriously needs to take a critical look at how the book wanders off as it gets to the end. A little tightening of the story line, and perhaps a minor reshape of the final scenes would make this an all-star book. ( )

I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

The book had a very steady start. It had me hooked for the majority until the climax. Then, I found myself losing interest and repeatedly putting the book down, procrastinating on finishing. When I finally got past the part I was dragging on, the story picked back up and rounded itself off nicely.

I appreciate how relatable I found the protagonist, Lisa. I enjoyed the overall conflict and how it played out. How the the subject of faeries and the journey of Lisa’s heritage was tackled was done in a creepy manner. I found the take of faeries in general a fresh view I appreciate. I didn’t however enjoy Lisa’s love interest. He felt like an afterthought or a walking archetype that just existed for the sake of the story.

The book gave me decent chills, a difficult task, I just wish the pacing towards the climax was better. That being said, this is a solid read for anyone interested in Dark fantasy and/or faeries. ( )

I must begin by saying that I am the author's mother. Several years ago, he and his wife Nancy were home and we were sitting on the back deck. We noticed that Murphy, or dog was sitting up and staring past the yard, past the field and pond, and at a point in the woods. We then noticed that Miss Kitty, on the deck was staring at the same spot. They stared, and stared, and stared, and it began to get creepy. Someone said, "Well Tom, there's your next book", and he said "I'm already on it". This is that story. You will have read the books prevue already. It is about love vs. hate, and good vs. evil, both in humans and in non-humans. Both are fleshed out quite well, and the fae, fairies, etc., are very believable. It is occasionally slowed down by descriptions of people or scenes, but generally is tense and fast-paced. It slowed a little toward the end, but then picked up and had a surprise ending, but appropriate. I would like to see a sequel as these characters will still have a tale to tell that should be even more exciting. A good read for fantasy followers. I received a copy of this book free. ( )
