Both are not in love and just search for a partner to be free of other peoples plans for them. Over the time (it is a romance ... what to do you expect? ;) ) Also Fyn learns sword fight and finds her inner high elf magic. Nice, easy, humor and of a happy end. And she does it by... trying to marry the disgraced former crown prince, who she knows is in love with some other woman. Things were indeed pretty bad for that to be the escape route. Everything she loves (e.g., the equivalent of martial arts in that world) is off limits and "not our thing" for the elven royal family. The humans have no such stifling social restrictions. The hero is a bit of a con man. He also knows that (even though he's not the crown prince anymore) he will still be under a lot of pressure to marry some brainless twit. Or--he could marry that elf princess that cynically offered to marry him, knowing all she knows; she won't expect much of him. Hmmm, that could work. But they have to pretend to be in love, or the sanctimonious elves won't believe it. (The dumb humans are just too happy to look much deeper.) Her father probably won't believe it anyway, but is he enough of a schemer to let it happen? Ok, so I'm a bit of a sucker for stories where people marry for less than romantic reasons and then work it out. This one was actually a pretty good one. Also, the banter between the characters is pretty good, entertaining all the way through (much more so than book #1). A quite enjoyable, light read. She starts to lose hope when the human translators only see her title and treat her with fear and awe. Yet there is one other human who can speak the language of the elves: the scorned Prince Benjimir.But Gwendafyn isn't that desperate. At least not yet. It starts as a marriage of convenience and an opportunity to strengthen the bond between their two peoples. But what if it could become something more?
