Biography & Autobiography. Juvenile Nonfiction. Religion & Spirituality. Sports & Recreations. HTML:The inspiring and critically acclaimed all-American story of faith, family, hard work, and perseverance by Olympic fencer, activist, New York Times bestselling author, and Time "100 Most Influential People" honoree Ibtihaj Muhammad
At the 2016 Olympic Games, Ibtihaj Muhammad smashed barriers as the first American to compete wearing hijab, and she made history as the first Muslim American woman to win a medal. But before she was an Olympian, activist, and entrepreneur, Ibtihaj was a young outsider trying to find her place.
Growing up in suburban New Jersey, Ibtihaj was often the only African American Muslim student in her class. When she discovered and fell in love with fencing, a sport most popular with affluent young white people, she stood out even more. Rivals and teammates often pointed out Ibtihaj's differences, telling her she would never succeed. Yet she powered on, rising above bigotry and other obstacles on the path to pursue her dream.
Ibtihaj's inspiring journey from humble beginnings to the international stage is told in her own words and enhanced with helpful advice and never-before-published photographs. Proud is an all-American tale of faith, family, hard work, and self-reliance.

Her experience growing up Muslim post 9/11 was surprisingly normal "suburban". Her treatment by coachs after high school, at Duke, Peter Westbrook Foundation and with the US team was appalling. That she persevered is inspiring. ( )

Young Reader's ed should be good for our teen readers; life of Ibtihaj as a young Muslim American in a very supportive and practicing Muslim family. Includes her exploration of her talents - finding fencing, her early training all the way through college days and into her time on the world circuit for competitions and being part of US team. Includes her going for Olympics- ultimately won Bronze in fencing w/US team in the Brazil Olympics. Started a clothing company with family members, became an ambassador for encouraging youth - organizations. Upbeat but includes the microagressions and more blatant racism/anti-Muslim treatment she received, and the difficulties working with team members and coaches who weren't supportive.

I really loved this. I know nothing about fencing, but it was a really interesting read anyway. I particularly liked how frank she was about all of the work that went into her fencing career, as well as her willingness to talk about how devastating losses can feel as an athlete. It's a relatively quick read, with some excellent photos included, and if you have the time I highly recommend it! ( )

Inspiring story!

Muhammad tells an amazing story - how she became an Olympian, to say nothing of a Barbie doll! Worth reading! ( )
