This book could be read to young children 4 and up. This book is about a family with two young children and boy named Gideon and his little sister Audrey who go to the beach and every year they build sandcastle together but this time Gideon ditched his sister to make a spectacular sandcastle that no one has ever seen and doesn't want his sisters help. He ends up struggling and realize at the end that these moments are special and create a bond with his sister when they work together.

I was somewhat unimpressed with the first book about this family and their adventures, so I wasn't expecting too much, going into Day at the Beach. To my surprise, I enjoyed it more than its predecessor, and thought it paired a sweet family story about learning to share the attention (and glory) with one's siblings, with cute artwork. Somehow, this one just worked for me, where the first one didn't. Recommended to anyone who (unlike me) enjoyed the first picture-book about Gideon, as well as to those searching for children's stories about sibling rivalry, and learning to play together. ( )
