Dory and her friends from Ms. Starr's Upside-Down Magic class set off on an overnight school field trip to Dragon Haven to see, and learn how to care for, dragons--unfortunately there are other students with regular magic there as well, so it is not long before the trouble starts. WARNING: SPOILERS MAY LIE AHEAD
It set in a magical world and that may offend some. The main character is Elinor "Nory" Horace. Nory feels she's a disappointment to her dad, a prestigious headmaster. Nory's magic isn't conventional so instead of being admitted to her father's school, she's sent to another school--one that has classes for "upside down magic".
However, I didn't feel like that Nory's school did a good job with its pupils. The field trip did more to get the students to feel like their powers were normal and had a place and could be harnessed or used than the school apparently did. For example, instead of allowing the flyer to fly and helping him learn to control his flying, they give him a backpack of bricks to keep him down or put him on a leash like a dog. They also forget his backpack in the parking lot at school and forget him more often than not.
It was nice to see Nory and her father come to an agreement. ( )
