This book is one of the few I have carried in my handbag to catch a snippet in a quiet moment. Had me laughing out loud in the queue at Primark! Funnier and kinder than Bill Bryson. Skips happily and randomly between hilarious dog training tricks and anecdotes and touching stories of a father's love for his daughter. You just have to go there!!! ( )

This is a truly unforgettable book! I laughed out loud in the garden, on the bus, at work. Mr Donoghue has a unique sense of humour and style of writing which succeeds in incorporating the search for his chosen best friend, the trials and tribulations of becoming a new master or slave as the case may be. Coupled with 'The alternative ten commandments' canine style!! Ultimately the odyssey which will definitely appeal to anyone both North and South of the border and beyond.There is so much historical detail and fact it will astound you. But ultimately you will fall in love with Barney the black labrador. Defined as the Bill Bryson....with a bayonet!
