The close-knit community in Cade Creek is the setting for yet another emotional struggle for a happy ending in ‘Home in His Eyes’, and this one was as dramatic as they come in this series. The story focuses on Adam, who has lost his lover in a drive-by shooting and returns to Cade Creek and his brother Russ (from book four) for a break. Only – Mike is not dead at all, and Adam has quite the shock when he finds out what really happened. Not that this is an easy process – both men have suffered from a separation neither wanted. A separation that, as slowly emerges, was caused by someone else. And to make matters worse, that “someone” is still at it now that Adam and Mike have been reunited.

Adam hurts pretty badly, even months after he was told his lover had died. Returning to his hometown as a freshly qualified vet is supposed to give him some breathing space, maybe a few options, but Adam finds it hard to focus on anything but his pain. He tries so hard to pick himself up, but it’s clear that he’s having a very hard time. It gets to the point that he thinks he sees Mike in town – only it isn’t a mirage, it really is Mike. Adam has no idea what to feel when Mike seems angry at him, and the emotional drama that follows brought me close to tears more than once.

Mike is a DEA agent and he has a broken heart after Adam dumped him – in a letter, no less. He tried contacting Adam for weeks, never heard from him, and got shot on a botched mission. Now he’s trying to recover in Cade Creek, staying with a friend, only to run into Adam and be accused of being the one at fault. Between the anger he feels and the curiosity to find out why Adam thinks what he does, Mike slowly uncovers a heinous plot that explains what happened.

Both men are still deeply in love with the other, but they have a lot to overcome before they can pick up where they left off. And when they do? Hold on to your hats! Not only does passion still flare white-hot between them, but whoever was behind the original separation is still after them. And that person does not shy back from using violence (guns, shootings, and a kidnaping included) to get what they want. It takes all of Adam and Mike’s determination, plus several of Cade Creek’s residents’ help to ensure these two get their much-deserved happy ending.

If you want to find out how the wonderful people of Cade Creek are doing, if you like emotional reunions that defy fate, and if you’re looking for a sweet read with a side of suspense and danger before the main characters can get their happy ending, then you will probably like this novella. I loved it!
