Linda Lowery does an excellent job of explaining the cause of the Cinco de Mayo celebration in Mexico by retelling the historical events that occurred in a way young readers will understand. The illustrations provide readers with details of the cultural traditions of Mexico and the celebration in the past and today. This book is about how Cinco de Mayo started. It gives details about the war with the French and about how they won although they didn’t have the power that the French had. It also tells about how the Mexican holiday is celebrated and what a day in Mexico on Cinco de Mayo would be like. The book goes into great detail, it tells what the food is like on that day, it tells what the streets are like, and it even tells what the people dress like on that day. The book also explains why the United States started celebrating the holiday too. The United States has helped celebrate the holiday by even having city wide celebrations. I found this book to be very interesting. The book was written at a level where it was informative but easy to follow at the same time. I think this book keeps the reader engaged and wanting to learn more about what Cinco de Mayo really is. I enjoyed reading this book because I never knew what Cinco de Mayo really was, or how it started. I think this book would be good to any grade or any age. It had facts that where interesting but not too deep on any one part of how it became such an important holiday. In the classroom, we could make or I could bring a piñata for the class to look at and break like they do on Cinco de Mayo. We could also have a fiesta (celebration) and make the foods that are popular for Cinco de Mayo. Another thing that we could do is wear the colors that are talked about in the book. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
