This is a fabulous book about engineers and engineering design. It tells readers that engineers are problem-solvers and then goes into specific types of engineering: aerospace, biochemical, chemical, mechanical, electrical, civil, computer and environmental engineering. I, personally, learned a lot, even thought this is a children's book. I like that Shannon Hunt also included real people ( men and women) who made their discoveries in each field of engineering. Love the book. ( )

This book is a higher-level picture book about all the different fields of engineering. It starts by talking about what an engineer is. Engineers are problem solvers. They use their math, science, and technology skills to find creative solution to problems. Then it talks about the engineering design process of define the problem, investigate requirements, develop and compare solutions, create, test and fix, optimize, and share ideas. Then it begins to go into the fields of engineering by giving definitions of each field, real-life stories, and a "team member bio," which discusses someone significant in that field. I would use this in my classroom before each engineering activity we do and read the section that has to do with the activity. For example, I would read the section about civil engineering before we created a suspension bridge out of certain materials. ( )

This is a colorfully illustrated and engaging survey about the subject of Engineering. I found this book very interesting but, not as much as my 9 year old. He excels in math and science and loves anything to do with either subject. I love that this book tackles the subject of engineering from problem solving, to process design, to material science. It does all of this with beautiful illustrations with captions and examples within the narrative.
Shannon Hunt has a Master's degree from the University of Victoria. I could not discover what that degree was in specifically. But, given my 20 years dealing with science and technology from a Naval perspective, I could find no inaccuracies or inconsistencies. I also love that this book gives equal treatment to women in the field of engineering.
There is included an in depth glossary and index both of which passed all my tests for finding words I felt would be appropriate to any discussion of engineering. On the subject of accessibility, the flaps as well as all other features presented make this book at once inviting and accessible to any young reader.
Teachers: This would be an excellent book to use in any math or science classroom to help illustrate the importance of your subjects to young students. ( )

This book is for curious young minds that want to know how things work, how bridges are built, why we go to space, etc. It has a lot of engineering facts to help readers decide if that is the job they want when they grow up. ( )
