The first in a sweeping and action-packed debut fantasy duology loosely inspired by the early climbers of Mt. Everest--perfect for fans of Cindy Pon and Alison Goodman. Kamzin has always dreamed of becoming one of the Emperor's royal explorers, the elite climbers tasked with mapping the wintry, mountainous Empire and spying on its enemies. She knows she could be the best in the world, if only someone would give her a chance. But everything changes when the mysterious and eccentric River Shara, the greatest explorer ever known, arrives in her village and demands to hire Kamzin--not her older sister Lusha, as everyone had expected--for his next expedition. This is Kamzin's chance to prove herself--even though River's mission to retrieve a rare talisman for the emperor means climbing Raksha, the tallest and deadliest mountain in the Aryas.  Then Lusha sets off on her own mission to Raksha with a rival explorer who is determined to best River, and Kamzin must decide what's most important to her: protecting her sister from the countless perils of the climb or beating her to the summit. The challenges of climbing Raksha are unlike anything Kamzin expected--or prepared for--with avalanches, ice chasms, ghosts, and even worse at every turn. And as dark secrets are revealed, Kamzin must unravel the truth of their mission and of her companions--while surviving the deadliest climb she has ever faced.… (más)

RIVER SHARA! that man could literally cut me and I'd still want to fuck him. Such a cute pairing and empowering story. ( )

This is a story about a race to the top of the mountain. The author did a phenomenal job creating a world with monsters, magic and witches with Nepalese culture.

But somehow I found it lacking. She talked of one of the characters having the cadence of a storyteller and I felt this book could have used a stronger storyteller, or maybe characters. Love the setting. Loved the parts on climbing. I really think there could have been more emphasis on the sisters' relationship ... and maybe more buildup to the action sequences.

This is the first book of a two part series.

I’m honestly not too sure how I feel about this. Is it a 3? Is it a 5? Who knows??? How the next book proceeds will definitely solidify how I feel about it and I will DEFINITELY be reading it.

Just be prepared to throw out ALL of your expectations when reading Even the Darkest Stars, and enjoy the ride. ( )

I loved EVEN THE DARKEST STARS and thought it was absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed the story and the setting - the SETTING was amazing. The setting of this book was inspired by Nepal and Mount Everest and the mountain itself became a character. Heather Fawcett did an amazing job bringing the reader into the story and immersing them in the world. This was such an easy book to fly through because I was invested in the characters, their survival, and learning more about this fascinating world.

This is a high stakes adventure with little bits of magic woven in. While this isn't your typical loud fantasy book, or romantically-driven, it's a good story with characters who feel multi-faceted and eat and vulnerable. Every time I sat down to read, I found myself immediately wrapped into the story and looking forward to the next time I could sit down and read more. If you enjoy adventure fantasy and don't mind books without a strong romantic subplot (there is romance, just not a LOT), then I highly recommend picking this book up. I absolutely loved in and will read it again.

If you were to ask me how good this book is I would respond with an “okay?”. At the beginning of the book I would say that it is really exciting because of how great the storyline is. However when the rise of action came in it didn’t really gave me that “oh what a cool book” type of thing. Its about this girl who bravely volunteered to accomplish a mission with a bunch of other people to find the solution of their problem. While I was reading this book at 8th grade I felt as though I was there with them that makes it really nice if you ask me. Fortunately I was able to finish this book at the end of 8th grade, and the ending didn’t satisfied me. I mean it was good but like it didn’t really have a great break through of the main issue. I would recommend this to any reader who loves action filled chapters because this book is literally that. Good book. ( )
