Little Hedgehog and his woodland friends return in this tenth picture-book devoted to their adventures from British author/illustrator team M. Christina Butler and Tina Macnaughton. When loud noises are heard at night, Fox and Badger both investigate, seeing red-capped creatures they believe at first to be Little Hedgehog. But when a terrible storm brings all of the friends out one night, it is revealed that the red-capped creatures are in fact beavers, working on building a dam. When the flooding river threatens the animals' homes, these new friends come to the rescue...

Although I wouldn't describe the books in this series as breaking new ground, when it comes to the picture-book form, I always find them enjoyable, appreciating their blend of sweet story and cute illustration. It probably helps that I have a soft spot for hedgehogs and porcupines. Like many of its predecessors, there is an interactive element to One Noisy Night, in the form of the red velvet material that is used for the red caps, in the artwork. This touch and feel element will no doubt please the young audience for which the book is intended. Recommended to fans of Little Hedgehog, and to picture-book readers looking for sweet stories of friendship and suspense. ( )
