I struggled with this at first, finding the characters a bit indistinct and the events confusing, but after a while it got me. The concept isn't that original, but it's a fun enough read and builds to a satisfying climax. ( )
Where is Rod Serling when you want him! Started out busy, then stuttered like Groundhog Day, then changed direction and gathered speed exponentially. I liked the way it was written and and how very believable the characters are. Great imagination! Greg Tremblay makes the urgency and suspense even more intense with his narration. ( )
...your relationship with your team in these tunnels is like a marriage: you work together through the good times, but you work even more closely through the tough. It's the only way to make it stick.
He wondered for how long he'd been drifting by people caught up in the midst of something huge, only their fearful eyes telling their true story as the rest of them blended in to their surroundings as they thought the same thoughts as he did now.
"And we've got to get out of here, like to Mexico or somewhere." "Mexico?" "Yeah, like in the movies. That's where you go when you're in trouble like this, right? Mexico?"
Lionel looked affronted. "How am I supposed to know? Because I'm black I'm supposed to know where federal criminals go to hide out?" "No, that's not what I meant..." Lionel sighed. "Sorry, man. I know you didn't. Just stressed, you know?"
His emotions were like the tunnels he'd worked in for so long, buried and invisible.
Georgie wasn't buying it. "You gave the CIA the slip?" she said, her anger and frustration barely held together. "You, a tunnel engineer from Queens, gave the CIA the slip?"
"I don't want them to see account activity until we're in El Paso, so we've got time to get clear." Josh laughed. "Are you sure you've never done this before?" Shaking his head, frowning, Lionel muttered, "Damn racist..." "I'm joking! Jesus, Lionel, lighten up." "Pfff."
"Why?" Not moving, Lionel opened an eye and gave Josh a sideways look. "I'm gangster, that's why," he said. "That what you want to hear, honky?" "You're such a dick," Josh said, sitting back and reclining his own seat. They both laughed.
"It's when I move," he wheezed to himself. "The sun moves when I move." The room. The sphere.
Being well-rested, he also needed to be well-fed before attempting the climb into the pit again, or else he risked falling and dying, or worse—falling and getting seriously injured.
"My family thinks I'm a quality assurance manager for a chain of shoe factories, Mr. Reed, have for nineteen years. They think I fly around the country inspecting shoe-making machines, doing health and safety drills. Do you know why?" Josh kept quiet. "I do it—we all do it—for their safety. The less they know, the better. You think about what you've discovered for a moment. Now imagine what would happen if word got out about this place. It would be chaos.
"Just how high a rank are you?" Josh asked. "Deputy Executive Director," Edwards said. Jesus, Josh thought.
"Where are we going?" Josh asked, trying to keep up with Edwards's long strides. "Somewhere no non-CIA operative has ever been before," Edwards said. "The archives."
"Hawking radiation. A theoretical type of energy released by black holes, formed from the quantum effects near an event horizon, where time is distorted to the point where it appears to stop, even theoretically reverse. We detected that energy, here, on Earth, a hundred feet below the pyramids. Can you believe that?"
"There's only one thing it could have been: a rip so deep in space-time that it had the power to burrow into the past."
"No, not that. I've been a bad husband, a bad father, and I'm sorry. I'm sorry I left you in Niagara, I'm sorry I left you for my job, I'm sorry—" "It's okay," Georgie said. She was crying now, her smile completely broken. "We can only change what's in front of us."
Signals from his brain were sent, but all his hand could do was shake. Does not compute. File not found.
"Wish me luck." Lionel laughed. "You don't need it. You're the luckiest son-of-a-bitch I ever met."
"No problem. I guess I'll be seeing you yesterday." For a brief second, Josh didn't understand. "Oh, right," he said, chuckling weakly. "I guess you will. See you yesterday, then."
His life was in his control and no one else's. The blame lay squarely with him.
