Thirteen-year-old Minto's family is in crisis. Minto's older sister has had a baby and immediately abandoned the family and her son. Her father and mother are overwhelmed with the new baby and not coping. When Minto hears discussions about the possibility of turning weeks-old Stevie over to adoption services, Minto must take action and responsibility. She steals away in the night with the baby, some basic supplies and a little bit of money to hide in a shacktown. There are so many problems to deal with -- Minto isn't sure she can make this work. But she has to keep trying because the alternative is not acceptable. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |

In an interview at the end of Saving Stevie, author Eve Richardson states that Minta is naïve and that runaways in general do not know what they are getting into. This is an adequate portrayal of the main character. The residents of Shacktown, both young and old, all deal with their situations in different ways, some optimistic, some depressed. While the characters are unique and interesting and the plight of these residents is adequately addressed, Saving Stevie is not a story that will resonate among most teenagers. Few kidnap their sister’s child and run off to a shanty town. The ending is anticlimactic and abrupt. Feel free to pass on this book. ( )
