Mystery. Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:Iâ??ll Give You the Sun meets True Detective in this brilliant YA debut about saints, sisters, and learning to let go.
Tess da Costa is a saintâ??a hand-to-god, miracle-producing saint. At least thatâ??s what the people in her hometown of New Avon, Massachusetts, seem to believe. And when Tess suddenly and tragically passes away, her small city begins feverishly petitioning the Pope to make Tessâ??s sainthood official. Tessâ??s mother is ecstatic over the fervor, while her sister Callie, the one who knew Tess best, is disgustedâ??overcome with the feeling that her sister is being stolen from her all over again.

The fervor for Tessâ??s sainthood only grows when Ana Langone, a local girl whoâ??s been missing for six months, is found alive at the foot of one of Tessâ??s shrines. Itâ??s the final straw for Callie. With the help of Tessâ??s secret boyfriend Danny, Callieâ??s determined to prove that Tess was something far more important than a saint; she was her sister, her best friend and a girl in love with a boy. But Callieâ??s investigation uncovers much more than she bargained forâ??a hidden diary, old family secrets, and even the disturbing truth behind Anaâ??s kidnapping. Told in alternating perspectives, A Psalm for Lost Girls is at once funny, creepy and soulfulâ??an impressive debut from a rising literary star.
Narrator List:
Callie, read by Saskia Maarleveld
Tess's Journal Entries, read by Kyla

DNF around halfway through because I read the first half over the summer and got bored, and just picked it up again and found myself just as bored and vaguely confused. ( )

This book is so beautiful, as a story about using personal grief to illuminate the grief in others' lives. It's so compassionate and poignant, not to mention a damn good mystery. I couldn't put it down even though I had a paper to write. ( )

Bayerl did a great job of paralleling the past and the present and the living and the dead. You learn about another culture (the Portuguese) and people’s religious beliefs in a natural, authentic way, one that promotes a desire to continue reading the book and to learn more background on the interplay of culture and religion as well.
