I wasn't given a choice. Not when I did my first line of cocaine. Not when I became a single mother. But I changed, and every decision I've made was to protect myself and my son from my weaknesses--and my past. Until Jude came along and made me question everything, even my own secrets. The sins I carry with me can never be discovered. Life handed me broken bits of people and left me to construct my own world, and it's too fragile to take a chance on Jude Mercer. We write our own stories. We build our own prisons. We weave our own lies. We commit the sins that bind us.… (más)

I am trying to write this review while I am still overwhelmed with so many emotions. This book hit home for me in many ways. I have lost family and loved ones due to addictions. Some have passed away, some I just stay away from. This book hits the 'Nail on the Head'. It is something that stays with you forever. All the 'if only's' and 'could have's'. I was lucky. I made a conscious decision that I would NOT let the poison of addiction ruin my future. But, I have had to deal with the emotions of watching people I love slowly slip away. Their futures so devastatingly burned to ashes.
Funny, I didn't cry while I read this novel, but sitting here trying to write my review.....
This book is a must read. It will open your mind to an understanding that will be forever lost to you if you don't read it. Yes, it is about addiction. But it is so much MORE than that. Because it is also about living. It shows how our past affects or future and our choices. It is also about acceptance. Not just others, but ourselves. Knowing who we are and forgiving ourselves. Then living with our knowledge and making our life count, even if in a small way.
Broaden your world and enlighten your mind.
You will literally feel your place in this world expand as your read this book. All the characters are so well defined that I could put real faces on them. In some instances those faces became people I know. The writing flows effortlessly and you will find yourself so engrossed you wont even notice the passage of time.
I want to say so much more, but honestly, I hate overly long reviews.
