To all appearances, Dan Chase is a harmless retiree in Vermont with two big mutts and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with by phone. But most sixty-year-old widowers don't have multiple driver's licenses, savings stockpiled in banks across the country, and a bugout kit with two Beretta Nanos stashed in the spare bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on the run. Thirty-five years ago, as a young hotshot in army intelligence, Chase was sent to Libya to covertly assist a rebel army. When the plan turned sour, Chase reacted according to his own ideas of right and wrong, triggering consequences he could never have anticipated. And someone still wants him dead because of them. Just as he had begun to think himself finally safe, Chase must reawaken his survival instincts to contend with the history he has spent his adult life trying to escape.… (más)

This is a thriller with believable, interesting characters, though I found the pacing uneven. Even in a thriller, not all the chapters should be at speed, but I found the flow here a little off pace; I’d get used to one momentum before being thrust into another and back again. Still, I found the story absorbing. Anyone who expects to find the television series in these pages may be put off. Maybe that’s why I found this a little jarring. Much more happens in the series than here, and the ending wraps up a little abruptly. It’s hard for me to choose which version I preferred. The character seems a like more mercenary in the books regarding his feelings. ( )

I love stories of aged spies that are trying to live through their pension without being molested by former employers. And then they start getting targeted just for being alive which spells doom for whomever is targeting them.

Won't go into details [because I dont want to spoil anything] but if you like A J Quinell works or adventures of Matt Helm this one is not to be missed.

Highly recommended. ( )

The old man is around 60 years old, has a nice life with his two dogs, a daughter, and a past that won't go away. So, he's always paying close attention for signs that his past has found his present, and one day, it happens. He's planned for it, but it's been many years, and he was getting comfortable, but he still has the old instincts it seems. He goes on the run, and always manages to keep a step or two ahead of his pursuers. Unfortunately, his pursuers are part of the government, who have a lot of ammunition at their disposal, so it's hard to hide.

He's somewhat of an older Jack Reacher. He's not afraid of the bad guys, and can handle himself in any situation he gets into. He's a good guy, too honest for his own good, perhaps, but that doesn't matter to the spooks who don't know anything about him, except for one that believes him and helps out a bit here and there.

It was an interesting story, although the ending seemed a little incomplete in some ways. I was hoping for a little more in some areas, but nothing really important. I'll definitely look for more from this author. ( )

The Old Man was a surprisingly action-packed read. It starts slow—just the story of a retired military man who enjoys walking his dogs (Dave and Carol), living quietly, and traveling a bit. But I soon realized that nothing in this book is what it seems. The violence is subtle at first, but throughout the story picks up speed. The plot twists are as scary and unexpected as the characters. I also enjoyed the author's simple style of writing. His straightforward narrative takes you inside his character's heads, so you understand their motivation. Many writers leave it up to the readers to figure their character's out—I like that too—but it was nice to sit back and enjoy the story without thinking about it too much. The ending was genuinely impressive. I love it when a story this complicated comes together so nicely. ( )
