When an ancient ritual requires Wonder Woman to protect a young woman from anyone who threatens her, it pits the Amazon Warrior against her Justice League ally, Batman! And while an array of enemies, including Silver Swan and the more dangerous than ever Dr. Psycho, attack Wonder Woman on all fronts, it's the publication of Princess Diana's book that opens her to an assault by a new and deadly foe - the malevolent Veronica Cale - and places Wonder Woman's island homeland of Themyscira in grave danger. Best-selling writer Greg Rucka (DETECTIVE COMICS) teams with artists JG Jones (FINAL CRISIS), Drew Johnson (SUPERGIRL), Shane Davis (SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE) and more for the start of his legendary run on the title as Wonder Woman stands against mortal foes and faces the machinations of the gods themselves! Fun read. Enjoyed the graphics and the stories, although there were things I've obviously missed from previous comics or story arcs. Good fun though. ( )

The story is good and Rucka's writing is compelling as he builds his characters and develops the plot with several subplots to create tension and conflict. There are multiple artists, however, and some of the artwork was more appealing to me than others, overall it was all good, but some was more to my liking. Overall a pretty good graphic novel with a Wonder Woman who is a more fully developed character and who offers concern for the environment, for human rights, and for the impoverished, a person willing to risk her own reputation for what is right. It was pleasant to revisit this solid run from more than a decade back. There's nothing flashy going on here, but it is thoroughly engaging as it slowly unfolds. ( )

Most of this graphic novel centers on Wonder Woman dealing with what we would call "conservatives" in our universe. Wonder Woman publishes a book of her speeches and essays that explain her background and ideals and then is attacked, physically and in the media. I really liked the concept and I think it made her seem more real to me than if she were just fighting a super-human monster. ( )

I want to read Wonder Woman written by a woman and drawn by a woman. I did not like this collection at all. In some scenes she, of course, strikes stupid sexy poses when the context doesn't call for it. And she wears skimpy casual clothing when her assistants are all dressed professionally. Please. And the storylines are no much better: In the Heketeia section a woman who avenges her trafficked and dead sister seeks sanctuary with Wonder Woman from Batman. Batman tells the woman that it's not her place to judge and avenge. Why doesn't she or WW call Batman on his hypocrisy? What is Batman if not a vigilante himself? It is again, men can do this, women can't thing. And it of course ends with the woman killing herself. Lame, lame, lame. And then there's the Veronica Cale storyline: she is out to get Wonder Woman because she's jealous. If this isn't a stereotype of women, I don't know what is. I did enjoy the storyline about the islands being knocked out of the sky due to an unintentional action of Hera's (though, again, Hera is portrayed as a jealous, nagging, henpecking wife) and WW sacrificing the protection of the islands for the protection of a US city, and her people basically cutting her off in response. Also, I thought that having Io making weapons and not figuring out why they disappear (uh, there can't be any weapons on the island . . . ) kind of dumb. ( )
