Last to Die (Rizzoli & Isles, #10) by Tess Gerritsen

Detective Jane Rizzoli lands a case where fourteen year old Teddy survived the murder of his parents and foster parents. Jane takes him to Evensong, an exclusive boarding school for teens who have experienced severe trauma. Three teens along with Teddy form a bond (over) shared experiences.

But something seems a bit off. People end up dead, it looks like there can be some kind of connection. Jane along with her Partner (Frost) and Dr Maura Isles delve into this case before more lives are lost.

The story moves at a steady pace with a slow burn. Well developed characters, engaging dialog and attention to details had me engrossed from the first page. Overall I enjoyed Last to Die. I highly recommend to those who enjoy (procedural) crime thrillers and fans of Tess Gerritsen.

*Bonus short story at end (John Doe) was fantastic as well! ( )

usual Rizzoli detective stuff with a nice end twist - good for the bus, lite and easy, ( )

I really liked the book and hope it isn't the last one in the series. It got a bit confusing at the end and I had to go back and read a bit to figure things out, but overall right up there with all the other Rizzoli & Isles books I've read. ( )

I have loved Tess Gerritsen's books since I first read "The Surgeon". The Rizzoli and Isles TV series is a continuation of her crime-solving duo. This one kept me up nights turning pages after saying"I'll just finish this one chapter." The ending was very surprising. I didn't see this coming. I am a little disgusted with Jane's mother and Dad. I guess the reader is supposed to be. Really, really good book. ( )

The Evensong school, sheltered amid piney woods deep in Maine, is an exclusive school for orphans, but not just any orphans; it is for those children who have lost their families due to murder. At Evensong, run by the Mephisto society, the children are well-protected and are taught survival skills for the time when they return to the outside world. Within the school’s population are 3 children who have been touched by tragedy twice in their short lives, the first when their families were killed and the second when their foster families met the same fate. Boston PD Detective Jane Rizolli and Chief Medical Examiner Laura Isles must find the connection between the three teenagers before the children meet the same violent fate.

I can’t quite put my finger on why I didn’t like this one quite as well as other Rizolli and Isles mysteries. Maybe it was a matter of timing more than anything else since I’ve had the book for quite awhile and made myself finally read it to get it off my shelf. Sometimes that’s not the best reason to read a book. On the whole it was a fairly good mystery and I’m still a Gerritsen fan.
