Es uno de los intentos más logrados de "historia total". Montaillou es una pequeña aldea de los Pirineos orientales franceses, donde en 1320 se desarrolla una investigación inquisitorial porque se han detectado algunos restos de catarismo. A partir de las actas inquisitoriales, tremendamente minuciosas, el autor ha podido reconstruir prácticamente todos los aspectos de la vida rural del cuadrante suroccidental europeo entre finales del siglo XIII y principios del XIV. Con este libro, Le Roy consiguió saltar el marco de los medievalistas y vender e interesar a muchas personas. No sólo se debe a su sólido sustrato investigador, sino también a una redacción cuidada, sin caer en la retórica de muchos de sus compatriotas, e incluso con una atención especial a la versión española, que de todas formas es obra de Mauro Armiño, que no está mal. No cabe duda de que el autor tuvo suerte, pero tampoco de que la suerte hay que buscarla, y también que otros, con una suerte similar, no son capaces de hacer más que un libro para especialistas. ( )
