As always, the effort to integrate Chakotay's heritage gets a bit cringey and tropey (See : http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MagicalNativeAmerican), but Golden seems to be making a real effort to reduce that while staying true to the source material. I especially appreciate the effort to emphasize the fact that Chakotay's people are colonists of Native American descent on another planet who have sought to revitalize traditional lifeways, rather than direct descendants of Natives still living in ancestral lands. This way they are to some extent are a fictional culture, rather than a bad fictional representation of a real culture.https://www.librarything.com/work/173248# ( )
