Caves of Kirym is a fantasy novel that is appropriate for young adult - adult. I will be honest in saying that fantasy is not my typical genre of choice. Having said that, please note: I happily gave this book five stars. Derin's writing style is so smooth and vivid that I couldn't put this book down. I bought this book, initially, wanting to support a fellow author. I started reading it out of curiosity. But, Ms. Attwood's talent is what kept me turning pages. I loved this story. I quickly found myself drawn into this fictitious civilization where, immediately, there are thirty people preparing for a journey. Among them, a young girl named Kirym. Gathering that this girl is a little young for this journey, I had to keep reading to see if she could handle the adventure. Already, I had bonded with this character to the point that I actually cared what happened to her. This is no easy feat, as any author knows. In the process, I learned about Teema. Teema is the mate of Kirym's sister. Kirym states that she likes him, so instantly, I also like Teema. What befuddles me is how I quickly met a number of other characters and I cared about what would happen with them, as well. Through descriptive narrative, I can visualize the setting and the character's appearances. I am intrigued! I move along through the pages and the beginning of a plot seems to be pulling me in, and what is with these life tokens? I can't stop reading! Then, somehow, the fate of a civilization ends up resting on the shoulders of young Kirym. I'm certain this author has lost her mind! More! I must read more. Now, we have to find a path that holds the key for getting out of this mystical world in hopes of finding another. But, that is no easy task, considering the artifacts that should guide Kirym have been destroyed. What is this author trying to do to me? Good grief! I feel myself reading faster. And, I did tell you that fantasy isn't even my preferred genre, right? So, imagine what kind of skill this takes. The danger! The suspense! The love of these characters...and more importantly, the moral of the story! My friends, this is where I leave you, confident that I have said more than enough for you to see that this book is packed with tons of exciting adventure, respectable characters, an amazing plot and creativity beyond anything I can describe. Having read this book, I can honestly say it was worth every penny. Derin Attwood is an amazing storyteller, a talented author and her ability to introduce a massive cast is unlike anything I have ever seen before. The only struggle I had was my curiosity about the life tokens (by design, I have no doubt, considering this is "The Token Bearer's Series). I have to say that I will be back for more. I have to understand this curious form of communication. The only other struggle I had was the unique character names. My brain wanted to make them more common names - undoubtedly due to my lack of experience with the fantasy genre. All around, this is a great book for your kids to read. And, then you can borrow it. It's a great and enjoyable bonding opportunity! Thank you for writing such an amazing read, Derin Attwood! I'll be back for the other books in the near future! ( )
