A boy is told that his father was a brave and virtuous man, a soldier who traded his life to save the lives of countless others. He was the man that Hunter needed to emulate. The only problem is that the story is a lie. The truth, which Hunter discovers as he begins his sophomore year of high school, is that his father has actually spent the boy's entire life in jail, paying his debt to society but not mending his ways. A wild mustang mare is rounded up by the BLM. The spring rains had been sparse, the forage on the plains even more so. The mare and her herd are rescued from certain starvation and placed for adoption. In a sandy corral at Promise Ranch, a home for troubled teenage boys, the boy and the mare meet. A weathered old cowboy brings them together: a mentor for one, a trainer for the other. The bond that forms between the boy and the horse becomes one that saves the lives of both.… (más)

Wow! This one was quite good and just kept me reading the whole time.
I loved how Sally (the horse) tenderly taught Hunter (MC) about patience, hard work, and being trustworthy. Sally was very scared, just as Hunter was, when he came to the ranch and it was nice to see their bonding. Some of the descriptions of the training got a little beyond my knowledge.
Smokey was such a great mentor for all the boys. He has lived a lot of life and I also found myself drawn to what he was saying.
That ending was heartbreaking but so full of hope. It just brightened up my day and I’m amazed by the author’s ability to play with emotions.
If you are looking for a book that will fill you with hope, I can’t point you to a better book than Heart of a Mustang.

A book for any age really...adult, teen or tween. It's a story of heart- about giving, sharing and what it takes sometimes to really see what love can be, or, already is.
Hunter's life gets turned upside psychologically and it takes a toll. Sent to a working ranch for boys, for a change of pace, change of scenery and a change of attitude, he connects immediately to a mare mustang.
As he works training HER he is being led and guided himself
I thoroughly enjoyed it, wished there was more and best of all? The entire time i was reading it i pictured Sam Elliot as the character and his mentor, Smokey... ( )
