Eve's murderer is messing with their heads, planting suggestions, causing them to murder others then commit suicide. This was a highly condensed 'In Death' book but still enjoyable and while Rourke often helps on cases, his helping on the case didn't really seem necessary so it stuck out as odd for me in this one. When Louise Dimatto asks Eve to take a closer look at an apparent murder/suicide, she soon realizes that something is amiss. Before killing her brother and them herself, Darlene Fitzwilliams visited several psychic mediums. Did one of them abuse their gift to torment an innocent young woman?
One of the shortest, but no less powerful installments in the series. The allusions to Lewis Carroll's classic Alice in Wonderland are artfully woven into the narrative, and searching out the references provides an additional layer of enjoyment to the reading experience.
The plot itself is quite straightforward, and the short format means that it moves at a rapid pace. Nevertheless, Robb's excellent characterization makes it easy to sympathize with the victims and despise the malevolent villain.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable novella. ( )
