Central to any history of Britian and Chile is the shadow cast by General Pinochet and the overthrow of the Allende Government in 1973 and Beckett explores the links between the Allende government and the British Left and Pinochet and his regime and the British Right. So we get eyewitness reports of the Allende overthrow and Pinochet's securing of power and while I try not to be too surprised by anything, I was still amazed at the close relationship between Thatcher's government and Pilochet's regime.
Of course, Pinochet got away scot-free, eluding those wishing to put him on trial for human rights violations by dying but while that instantly dates this book somewhat, I still highly recommend it for the interested reader. ( )
