Not your typical Holmes adaptation, the author has put Doyle's crime-solving duo in an unexpected location, and given our detective the highly unusual task of solving his own murder. Set against the backdrop of space, humanity at war with 'Mimetic' forces, Holmes' investigation and Watson's metamorphosis from despondent convicted murderer into the confident partner Holmes needs are beautifully done. Along the way to solving the case the characters examine difficult questions dealing with what it means to be human, and what it means to be alive. I loved this book, and am highly anticipating the adventure in the sequel. ( )
