There was a time when AMC performance was more of an afterthought to the muscle car era. Sure, the Javelins and AMX cars were cool, as were the really limited cars such as the Scrambler and the Rebel Machine, but with production numbers a distant fourth place in the American manufacturer muscle car scene, well, you could be forgiven for not remembering much about them through the years. Fast forward to today, and AMC muscle cars are among the fastest appreciating performance vehicles in the market. Low production numbers combined with capable performance as well as cool and unique styling have increased coverage in magazines and at auctions, making these cars more valuable than ever before. Concours-restored AMC muscle cars routinely bring $30,000 to $65,000 in the collector car world, making a comprehensive restoration guide a must-have for any American Motors enthusiast. AMC Javelin, AMX and Muscle Car Restoration 1968-1974provides in-depth coverage of the decoding and documentation process of an AMC muscle car, primarily the popular Javelin and AMX models. Author and expert AMC restorer Scott Campbell gives you a detailed account of important aspects of restoration including rust repair; panel and sheet-metal replacement; interior and trim restoration; undercarriage chassis, suspension, and driveline rehabilitation; as well as every other major component group. Also included are multiple "how-to" sequences that, regardless of your skill level, will assist you in restoring your AMC muscle car. This restoration guide chronicles the entire process of AMC ownership from selecting a vehicle to disassembly to final re-assembly. You will find coverage of all steps throughout: from turning the first bolt to tumbling the key in the ignition following completion of your restoration. If you own an AMC muscle car, especially a Javelin or an AMX, this restoration guide will be your go-to source for restoring glory to your unique AMC muscle car.… (más)

Wonderfully thorough descriptions. Great photos and all the details are easy to follow. I wasn't planning on restoring my Javelin, just yet, but I anticipate it will be happening sooner than later now that I have this! ( )

Scott Campbell's book on AMC restorations is a careful, highly readable guide to the details necessary to accurately restore these cars. The author states in his introduction that this is neither a general book on automobile restorations nor a mechanic's guide to these cars. The reader is expected to have basic knowledge of restorations and to possess a technical service manual for his or her particular model. The book is not a true step-by-step guide, but each chapter covers an aspect of the restoration process, with an overall summary followed by a wealth of details specific to these cars, that would not be found in service manuals. These are details like the order parts are painted in, sticker placements, disassembly and reassembly hints that may not be found in the manuals, and advice on when to use new, used, or reproduction parts and where to find them. Not being an expert on these cars, I can't speak to the accuracy or completeness of the technical details, but the book appeared to go into a good deal of depth over many small details that an accurate restoration would need to take into account, and did so in a very readable style, with the support of a wealth of detailed photographs. This book displayed such detailed plans and execution of a car project you might want to tackle. Easy to understand and follow the restoration process, color photos sure do help a lot when you come upon a similar problem. Creating a game plan and getting started is the prime reason one gives up like sinking in quick sand. But this book makes it less intimidating for sure. I sure appreciated the detailed organization and structural plans. Well written and knowledge duly noted throughout. Thank you, received a copy through LibraryThing. ( )
