I found this a quick read, and not very memorable as regards prose style, or maps, but it is a good first read for the generalist ( ) Glover alternates very cleverly between a "high level" view of the conflict and the intimate detail provided by the letters and quotes of those directly involved (almost exclusively from the British side, it has to be said). An appendix offers a comprehensive list (and mini-biography) of all the leading officers involved, often with a witty, one-line appraisal of their abilities by Wellington himself. I only have one real criticism, and that concerns the maps. My geography of Spain isn't too shabby, and yet I still had real trouble interpreting troop movements on a large scale, let alone understanding how the armies faced up on the battlefield. Most of the maps seem to be little more than rough sketches, that fail to highlight important geographical features adequately. Or maybe the author was attempting to give a taste of the difficulties posed by contemporary maps?! Don't let it ruin your enjoyment though. This is well worth the read. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

Wikipedia en inglés (92)The Peninsular War is often eclipsed by the spectacular individual battles by sea and land of the Napoleonic Wars, but it was the decisive struggle in which the Emperor's troops faced defeat for the first time. Michael Glover seeks to give the basic skeleton of facts and to flesh it out with first-hand accounts of what it was like to march and fight, to eat and be wounded, to command and be commanded at the start of the 19th century. Stress is laid on the technological limitations of warfare during this period, when all the movement was limited to the pace of a heavily-laden infantryman moving across country.
