After the Bell Rings: Poems About After-School Time by Carol Diggory Shields is a compilation of poems that student's would potentially be doing after school lets out. Things like playing sports and instruments, homework, eating snacks etc. I really loved the pictures in this book because they really helped me visualize what was going on in the poem. Some of the poems are more serious and straighforward, and others are comedic and light-hearted. A great extension activity for this would obviously be to have the student's write their own poems about their favorite activities to do in or out of school. Another activity would be to have the student's discuss with a partner what they typically do after school and how they spend their evenings during the week. ( )
