Sweet Forgiveness by Lori Nelson Spielman is a beautifully written and thought-provoking novel about forgiveness. In this powerful novel about granting and seeking forgiveness, talk show host Hannah Farr is thrust into the uncomfortable position of revisiting a very painful time in her life. Her journey leads to an unexpected reconciliation but it also causes her to doubt her perception of long events. Confronting the past is often a double-edged sword and Hannah learns this lesson first hand when everything she has worked for is jeopardized by her decision to seek and give absolution.

Hannah's impulsive decision to use the forgiveness stones as a pitch for a new job is the catalyst for the upcoming turmoil in her life. She really does not intend to move from New Orleans to Chicago, but she hopes to use the job offer as leverage to get her boyfriend of two years to finally propose to her. Hannah is stunned when the ploy backfires and he encourages her to seriously consider the position. Although she decides that accepting the job would be a wise career move, she still has no intention of actually following through on her forgiveness stone idea, but when a conniving co-worker forces her hand, Hannah has no choice but to move forward with her plan.

For someone who has been in the cutthroat world of broadcast journalism for a number of years, Hannah is a little naive and way too trusting. Although her close friend, Jade, warns her to watch her back, Hannah ignores her advice and blunders her way into a situation that quickly spirals out of control.

All the while this professional drama is playing out, Hannah's personal life is also imploding. Her gullibility extends into her relationship with her mayor boyfriend and she is completely blindsided by his reaction to her decision. Hannah is further shocked by his lack of support and his total disregard for her needs.

Sweet Forgiveness is a very poignant novel that does not shy away from difficult topics. While Lori Nelson Spielman handles these issues with sensitivity, the resolution of this part of the storyline is rather ambiguous and a little dissatisfying. However this does not impact the overall enjoyment of the story and the conclusion of Hannah's journey is quite heartwarming. It is a compelling read that is quite unique and one that I highly recommend. ( )

Eine Autorin entfacht einen Riesen-Hype um die sogenannten Versöhnungssteine: Man erhält einen mit einer Bitte um Vergebung und gibt ihn zurück, wenn man vergeben hat. Mit einem weiteren Stein soll man selber um Vergebung bitten.
Die TV-Moderatorin Hannah Farr hat einen solchen Stein und müsste sich dringend bei ihrer Mutter entschuldigen. Seit 20 Jahren haben sie keinen Kontakt mehr. Was nun in Folge verschiedener Versöhnungsaktivitäten geschieht, krempelt Hannahs ganzes Leben um.
Das Buch ist gespickt mit einfachen Lebensweisheiten ala »Du wirst nie eine Zukunft haben, wenn du dich nicht mit der Vergangenheit versöhnst.« Dennoch ist da natürlich etwas wahres dran und die ganzen Versöhnungsgeschichten sind einerseits traurig, andererseits aber auch extrem rührend. Hannah ist sympathisch, die Liebesgeschichte süß. Insgesamt also ein nettes Buch, wenn auch nicht so schön wie "Morgen kommt ein neuer Himmel". ( )

Nach „Morgen kommt ein neuer Himmel“ ist „Nur einen Horizont entfernt“ der zweite Roman von Autorin Lori Nelson Spielman, der mir leider insgesamt nicht mehr so wahnsinnig gut gefallen hat wie ihr Debüt.

In „Nur einen Horizont entfernt“ geht es ums Vergeben und Vergessen. Denn damit wird Protagonistin Hannah konfrontiert, als sie von Fiona, die sie in der Schule gemobbt hat, zwei Versöhnungssteine bekommt. Einen, um ihn als Zeichen ihrer Vergebung an Fiona zurück zu schicken und einen, um ihn als Bitte um Versöhnung an jemanden weiter zu senden. Doch das bedeutet auch sich mit den Geistern ihrer Vergangenheit auseinander zu setzen und Hannah ist sich alles andere als sicher, ob sie das wirklich will.

Eigentlich eine sehr gute Prämisse für einen gefühlvollen, ereignisreichen Roman, aber leider wollte es zwischen mir und dem Buch einfach nicht funken. Das fing schon damit an, dass ich – obwohl sie meine Namensvetterin ist – ziemliche Probleme hatte, mit Hannah warm zu werden, denn sie war zu Beginn der Geschichte einfach sehr, sehr naiv und nervig und bis sie sich irgendwann zu einem ernst zu nehmenden Charakter entwickelt hatte, war für mich leider schon ein Großteil des Charmes der Geschichte verloren gegangen. Dazu kommt, dass die Handlung zwar beim besten Willen nicht langweilig ist, denn es geschieht durchaus einiges, aber leider ist vieles davon auch absolut vorhersehbar.

Alles in allem ist „Nur einen Horizont entfernt“ von Lori Nelson Spielman zwar durchaus ein unterhaltsamer Roman, im Vergleich zum ersten Roman der Autorin hat mir aber leider einfach dieses gewisse Etwas gefehlt. Trotzdem, schöne Lektüre und für alle Fans von Lori Nelson Spielman definitiv einen Versuch wert! ;) ( )
