The aim of this webinar from YALSA is to give YA librarians (or librarians in general) different ways to serve the young adults’ needs in the library outside of collection development (although that’s obviously extremely important). The webinar discusses teen advisory boards, nontraditional collection examples (with information on cost, ease of implementation, and policy ideas), and how all this connects to connected learning, which libraries are already oriented towards.

A definite positive note of this webinar is that it recognizes budget constraints; we’d all love to have the YouMedia resources like the Chicago Public Library, but many of us don’t have those funds or space. As such, the presenter gives ideas based on libraries with more limited budgets and space. The presenter, a professor, does a nice job of presenting, and where this could be a dry subject, her enthusiasm makes up for it and she keeps the listener engaged in the content. For young adult librarians, sometimes it’s easy to let things besides collection development get lost in the shuffle, but this webinar does a fantastic job of providing librarians with different ways to serve the young adult population.
