The magic & story line was good, but besides Barnabus none of the characters were interesting at all. ( )

A promising start to the series, though a little under-developed for my tastes in the urban fantasy genre. The author is clearly writing this series for young audiences, what with the young protagonists, really quite obvious villain character, and seriously young romance aspects. Apparently this is a second set of books that relate to "Mytica," which made the jumps to the "other world" from Earth a little jarring, but for readers who have read the series I can imagine that they are happy to see more of this magical world ruled by two (evil) elemental goddesses. There are 4 main characters Crystal or Crys, Becca who is adopted, Madox who is from another world and is a necromancer, and Ferrell who is in an evil and secret society called the Hawkspear society they are all in different chapters of the book. first Becca touches a book and ends up in a different world Madox sees her as a spirit and talks to his mom Farrell has tons of money and goes to a gathering. Becca is in a coma Crys feels it is her fault and is sad Madox goes on a adventure an is hit down by his guardian Lividus a substitute dad and bleeds. Farrell is entered into a middle circle and gets a second mark Crys hears a call she shouldn't have and talks to her dad. Madox knocked out a guy and was put in a dungeon and Lividus was killed by a magic snake. Farrell beat some guys face in and didn't care about what he just did he also let a guy die. Crys talked to a guy and learned stuff about a book and she was mugged and her camera broke and the guy she talked to was almost killed to get information from him on his lunch break and was in the hospital Crys has a cat named charlie and it hissed at Farrell when he went into the bookstore and clawed his hand then Becca woke up in a maze with Crys and they escaped Farrell and were free Crys's dad killed a guy too.
this book was great a ton of action and plot. everything enter twined into a great story. The ending was a cliff hanger though. That's why it got a 4.5 rating. I liked Madox the most because necromancy is very cool I wish he used it more though. I also liked it because it has magic and I like magic. There is also another world which I thought was cool too. ( )

This is the first time I have read this author and I have to say she has gained a fan. I love a well rounded and well written fantasy series and this this novel is definitely a winner. I am looking forward to reading more by Morgan Rhodes :) ( )
