From the acclaimed author of The Haunting of Maddy Clare comes another spellbinding ghost story set in 1920s England.

London, 1925. Glamorous medium Gloria Sutter made her fortune helping the bereaved contact loved ones killed during the Great War. Now she's been murdered at one of her own séances, after leaving a final message requesting the help of her former friend and sole rival, Ellie Winter.

Ellie doesn't contact the deadâ??at least, not anymore. She specializes in miraculously finding lost items. Still, she can't refuse the final request of the only other true psychic she has known. Now Ellie must delve into Gloria's secrets and plunge back into the world of hucksters, lowlifes, and fakes. Worse, she cannot shake the attentions of handsome James Hawley, a damaged war veteran who has dedicated himself to debunking psychics.

As Ellie and James uncover the sinister mysteries of Gloria's life and death, Ellie is tormented by nightmarish visions that herald the grisly murders of those in Gloria's circle. And as Ellie's uneasy partnership with James turns dangerously intimate, an insidious evil force begins to undermine their quest for clues, a force determined to bury the truthâ??and whoever seeks to expose… (más)

I absolutely adore Simone St. James' writing style.

This book was incredibly captivating! Every single character was brilliantly developed. I was hooked throughout the whole story.

James and Ellie were adorable together! Their ending was just perfect, and I especially loved the addition of the pup! Gloria was so well-written; she rubbed me the wrong way from the start.

The ending surprised me and I didn't love it because it wasn't a "did you figure it out yet" surprise - it was more, let me tell you who it is! Overall, the book was so well-written, intriguing, and I absolutely enjoyed it! ( )

London, 1925. Psychic Gloria Sutter goes to a seance and is murdered. She leeves a note for her former friend and rival psychic, Ellie Winter, to find her. Thus begins a trip through the world of psychics, post World War I England, Scotland Yard and the disbeliefs in psychics, those who can reach into the world of the dead.

Simone St. James' books are always a pleasure to read. There is mystery, paranormal phenomena, great characters and a great story. When in doubt, try Simone St. James. ( )

Listened to the recorded book, enjoyed it much but for the very ending. Well-plotted with detailed characters, it had me from go with "psychic medium" and "mystery". Eight discs, good length, lovely reading by Mary Jane Wells. ( )

I have read and enjoyed several of Simone St. James's novels including The Haunting of Maddy Clare, Silence for the Dead, The Broken Girls, and The Broken Girls. All have given either three- or four-star ratings. This one, however, was the worst of the lot with two-stars only. I was tempted several times to lay this one down but kept plodding through with plodding being an apt description.

What attracts me to St. James's books is that she combines a couple of genres including historical fiction and mystery and throws in paranormal activities to boot. Although this current read includes all of these, the paranormal aspects played a backstage to the other genres.

The novel's protagonist, Ellie Winter, has assumed her mother's business as a psychic in post-WW1 London. Her particular psychic ability is psychometry, which is an extrasensory perception stimulated by the touch of physical objects. People pay her to find lost objects. When a medium, Gloria Sutter, is murdered, her brother honors a written message she left behind to have Ellie find her. I had high hopes like her other books that I have read, but, in this case, it was only okay. ( )

A spooky romance focusing on Ellie, a medium, who was been asked to solve the murder of her frienemy Gloria. Ellie has true psychic gifts, and must put her own life at risk and use her powers to get justice and avenge her friend's murder. Along the way, she reconnects with a professional debunker that she has a bit of a crush on, and he decides to assist her. ( )
