"Laos, 1979: Dr. Siri Paiboun, the twice-retired ex-National Coroner of Laos, receives an unmarked package in the mail. Inside is a hand-woven pha sin, a colorful traditional skirt worn by women in certain northern Lao tribes. A lovely present, but who sent it to him, and why? And, more importantly, why is there a severed human finger stitched into the sin's lining? Siri is convinced someone is trying to send him a message, and won't let the matter rest until he's figured it out. He finagles himself and his wife a trip up north to the province where the sin was made, not realizing they are embarking on a deadly scavenger hunt. Meanwhile, the northern Lao border is about to erupt into violence. China is at odds with Vietnam over the ongoing war in Cambodia, and the Chinese army is rumored to be poised at the Lao border, waiting to invade one or another of the erstwhile allies. The murder of two village chiefs is about to escalate into an international incident--and Dr. Siri and his entourage are walking right into the heart of the conflict"--… (más)

Love this series. The main characters are all delightful. It does appear as the series progresses the villains get nastier though and the plots darker. The bad guy here is a true psychopath. Without giving too much away. A little concerned with the very last sentence of the book. Siri will be back I hope? ( )

Probably my least favourite of the series but still a good read. Towards the end I thought I was missing the point of quite a lot of what was said, almost as if I had not paid attention earlier on - but I did pay attention all the way through - perhaps I was just missing the point. ( )

Well written, unusual. set in Laos in the 1970s. Part of a series. ( )

A strangely confusing entry into the Dr. Siri mysteries. Siri, having retired yet again from the position of coroner, and Daeng, whose noodle house had burned down in the last episode, are tempted upcountry by a strange delivery in the mail. The Chinese invade Vietnam while they are there, and Chinese have also been building roads in the northern province of Laos. Phosey is also in the area, investigating two deaths near the Chinese road crew encampment. Confusion abounds, and Yao Ming is not in evidence.

The ending is rather strange. I actually checked to make sure there were more books in the series - maybe I'll figure out what's going on in the next book. ( )

On December 25, 1978, the concrete public-address system pole in South That Luang's Area Six unexpectedly blew itself up, a Lao skirt with a severed finger sewn into the hem passed through the national postal system unchallenged and Vietnam invaded Cambodia.
