The 4th and 5th books of the Alvin series, which are Alvin Journeyman and Heartfire. The story of Alvin continues as he grows up and continues to oppose the Unmaker in any way he can, often at cost to himself and his friends. Alvins goodness and kindness and stubborn persistence see him through, though is blind spot for bad people often leads him into more trouble. The Alvin series, set in an alternate frontier America where everyone has a magical talent of some kind, is really an excellent series. ( )

"You left out the h in hain't."
“Trouble?” said Verily. “I’ve been stupefied with boredom in New England. Everything’s so peaceful here. Everything runs smoothly, most disputes are settled peacefully, neighbors pretty much get along, people are happy an extraordinary proportion of the time. I’m a lawyer, for heaven’s sake! I was about to lose my mind!”
